I've been shopping on Etsy since 2005. Yes, let your jaw hit the floor. I bought a little zine, and I wondered, "What does Etsy mean?" A year later I started a shop making little polymer clay robots and jewelry, and in 2011 made Jumbo Jibbles a real thing with my fruit pillows. Oh children, it was less than a year between making my first big asparagus and deciding I'd see if people would pay me money. They did! You never know.
Etsy was a very different spot back then, absolutely handmade. If it wasn't, people didn't want it. But I won't bellyache about how it's changed so much and what that's meant for my ability to make a living there. There are still tons of awesome creations there, and wonderful people doing their own thing*. It pains me to hear people say it's just mass produced, print-on-demand stuff. There's way too much of that and it makes it hard to find real handmade product. But--
Do your search, make sure you choose "Ships from United States" and immediately go to the 10th page of the search results. Don't look at that first page at all! It'll be mostly ads, and people who have offer "free" shipping and get to the front of the line. Go to the back of the line, where things are still a little wonky and prices aren't inflated to cover all that "free" stuff.
